I'm so glad to see this Dickinson poem today. I have always been a great admirer of her work, and I haven't read any Emily in a while. You have made my day with this blog post.

You have comments turned off for your Snowman post, but I wanted to say that I/we LOVE The Snowman. It is so great. The music that goes with the video is so serene. I'd take hand-drawn artwork over computer animated any day of the week!

Thanks for the comments! Sometimes the more I look at a painting (or poem) the more I see in it. And even when I don't understand it entirely, that often makes it even more interesting, and keeps me coming back.

"and yet my song comes native with the warmth" - I love that line.
I also love what you wrote of Friedrich's painting, about the mystery surrounding the figure. It's an interesting take on portraiture. That is something I love attempting accomplish in my paintings - the ability to cause the viewer to wonder, to want to be inside it. I love seeing it in the work of others.
Thanks for sharing both the painting and the poem!

Thank you for reminding me about Arthur Rackham - it isn't that his images are uplifting, although they are, like anything beautiful, but I always find something movingly yearning in them. They are so infused with a sense of something long desired but unobtainable - a sort of peripheral vision.

Could the book of greek myths be an edition of The Heroes by Charles Kingsley? I remember having an edition with particularly lovely illustrations when I was a child?
